These are probably the most common type of courts in schools and local authority parks, as they try to cater for a range of uses – as the name suggests. As each sport has a preferred surface, getting the balance to allow the use of the court for more than one sport is the key. For example, tennis want painted macadam or short pile synthetic grass; netball want black porous macadam; football wants long pile 3G rubber infill synthetic grass. However, not all sports can be played on every surface.

So, which is the best surface for you? Factors such as budget and space come into play here also. Can you divide the area available into having different surfaces for different sports, divided by rigid or retractable nets? How long do you want the surface to last – as there can be a trade-off between quality and durability.
